70th Anniversary Picnic

Another great day for enjoying the outdoors and Chapter friends. Those who came to eat and play had a great time thanks to all those who helped make it happen.

Under the general chairmanship of Bob Brino, there were ponies to ride, a bounce castle, sno- cones, lots of beverages and shady spots to enjoy the picnic food.  The chicken was great, the pork and beef delicious and all the other picnic food just hit the spot.

Thanks to Chief Cook and Organizer, Rich Kohne, all the trappings came out trumps.  His “kitchen” crew included Meredith Brino, Bill Faulk, Wayne Owens, Gilbert Ramey, Art Shope, Frank Boyko and several 6-hour workers who made invaluable contributions to the preparation of all that food.
It was an honor to welcome past president, Pete Evick and his wife, Lil, at this picnic.  And true to his nature, Pete waded right in and helped set up and keep things moving.
We look forward to another great picnic in 2007 so you might want to circle Saturday, July 14, on your calendar.

AJ came to Northern Virginia in the early 60's and proceeded to shoot a great many rounds of Skeet and Trap at our Chapter facility over some 40 years.  He arrived when the facility had only one trap and one skeet field.  A J was among the volunteer workers who built the additional fields in the late 60's.
In addition to our IWLA Chapter, AJ became a member and shot at several other local shooting clubs.  He was a Director of the National Capital Gun Club.  He became a very good shot gunner and shot at many competitive shoots.  Among his shooting awards were being named to the Virginia All-State Skeet Team in 1991 and to the All-America Skeet Team in 1993.
AJ made friends easily.  Everyone around the shooting clubs knew AJ, not only as a good shooter, but as a good friend.  During much of the last year, he wasn’t shooting, but he would be at the Chapter facility when it was open.  He was in an easy chair on the front porch with a cup of coffee and a cheerful greeting for everyone who came by.  AJ will be missed by many, especially those of us who frequent the Skeet and Trap facility.
